Brain Food: New Year, New Mindset

Written by Rae-Claire Embree

As we dive first into the new year, I’m ‘fighting’ against the pressure of New Year’s resolutions, instead approaching them with a ‘New Mindset’.

When I think about it, humans (aka animals) are wired to rest and recharge, especially during these colder months. Wild animals hibernate, stay cozy, and take their time. So why should I push myself to reinvent the wheel right now?

There’s plenty of time for big changes in the spring when the sun is out for longer periods as we emerge from our ‘dens’. So for now, I’m embracing rest and letting the new year unfold naturally—no hustle required.

These “Brain Food” topics below are about sparking inspiration, without the pressure to do it all right away.

Have a topic you’d like us to cover for the next edition? We’re all ears! Drop your ideas, and let’s keep the conversation flowing.

Finding Hope Through Song

Mon Rovîa, an Afro-Appalachian folk artist with ties to both Liberia and Tennessee, blends elements of folk and pop in his music. His latest work, featuring tracks like “Outlaw For Your Love” and “Big Love Ahead,” brings together themes of hope and introspection, underscored by mellow, melodic arrangements.

Even when exploring somber themes, his sweet, ukulele-driven tunes convey hope and unity, a reflection of his own journey through personal and political strife as a refugee.
