Finding joy in community and connection grows imperative and therefore, essential, every day. It was not too long ago that this country faced a dark reality and continued consequences thereafter. My heart will continue to break for those negatively impacted by our new administration.

When I need inspiration, I turn to treasured spaces that spark happiness – gathering with friends over our favorite foods, a good cocktail, and a crowded dancefloor all to create moments of fun where I can be authentically myself.

In that same spirit, I’m thrilled to share some of my favorite local spots that never fail to bring smiles and create wonderful memories. These vibrant establishments showcase the very best of what brings people together.

Let me take you on a tour…

Get Your Self-Care–The Tonsorium

Most people you meet in Denver aren’t actually from here. Like me, they moved to the city and surrounding areas from somewhere else, making our community a mix of newcomers who’ve all chosen to call this place home. I personally, know just how difficult and important it is to find the right person to do your hair. It took me quite some time, but I found the best spot in Denver. Located on east Colfax near Cheesman Park, this joint barbershop and hair salon is phenomenal. As soon as you step into the modern industrial space you are greeted with amazing music, the best vibes, and a glass of top-shelf… whatever you want. They strive to provide an experience draped in luxury. The Tonsorium provides an array of hair services including deep washes, touch-ups, and the works; as well as various braiding services by Loc Paradise

Night Out with Friends– The Glass Grove

The Glass Grove has to be one of the most sacred and beautiful places in the heart of Denver. Located downtown in the Dairy Block, this establishment provides a safe space for people of every culture to gather and commune together in the name of common ground. They host a variety of events including comedy and poetry nights, tea circles, and small music sets. My personal favorites are the intimate concerts they host. I truly enjoyed sitting on those comfy couches with my dear friends, while we listened to such amazing talent. The vibes in this place are unmatched. Come be one of the first to hear new local artists, poets, and comedians.

Take Your Family and Friends– Vibes in the Park

Vibes in the Park (VITP) takes place, primarily in the summer. It is a wonderful place to bring family and friends on a Sunday afternoon and participate in shared experiences with fellow people of color. From amazing DJ sets and live music to the delicious smell of fresh grilled food, bring an outdoor blanket and your favorite drink and come chill for the afternoon. I will never forget the first time I attended one of their events. I felt at home in that atmosphere and welcomed by everyone. Kids were laughing, the music was loud, and the delicious smell of BBQ filled the air. I have been obsessed with VITP ever since. This is a vibrant spot with so much happening all at once. It is the perfect place to bring children of all ages, let loose, and dance. The producers of VITP host many events during the summer including concerts and activity fest centered around celebrating black culture.

Career and Self Development– Vibes After Dark

Unity is critical, especially now. Vibes After Dark is the sister company to VITP, and it provides even more opportunities for individuals of every culture to come together in the name of celebration and networking. After Dark hosts many networking events with speakers and panels highlighting people of color. From mixers for authors and journalists to mixers for those looking to take their next step toward a new career goal, After Dark is a great event to create connections. The last event I attended was hosted in the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art rooftop cafe and bar. The evening began with scrumptious cocktails and chill beats. By the end of the night, I had made five really great connections. The producers put you in fantastic locations with amazing food while setting the stage for you to shine.

The combination of all four of these places always puts me in the best of moods, even when the world around me encourages me to go in the other direction. Allow me to be completely candid with you as the reader. As a woman of color, I was asked to write this blog post in honor of Black History Month. And, while challenges exist, there is still so much light to celebrate. Life will never not have its highs and lows. How we personally choose to handle them is what matters most. So, go grab your friends and family and indulge in some much-needed self-care. Lastly, quoting the wise words of Beyonce, “Step in your essence and know that you’re excellent.”
